In simple terms
HODL is a misspelling of hold that became part of Bitcoin culture. It now refers to keeping a crypto asset for a long period, often through substantial volatility.
The documented origin
On December 18, 2013, GameKyuubi posted “I AM HODLING” on BitcoinTalk and explicitly acknowledged the misspelling. Hold On for Dear Life is a later backronym: it may help people remember the word, but it is not its origin.
A motto is not a process
HODL expresses an orientation, not a complete strategy. It does not specify asset selection, size, custody, venue risk, invalidation, or future liquidity needs. Holding may fit a plan; the slogan does not make the asset safe and does not guarantee recovery from a drawdown.
