In simple terms
Degen shortens degenerate. In crypto slang it describes a speculator who accepts extreme risk, often in memecoins, new tokens, or highly leveraged positions. It can be a self-description («I am a degen») or criticism of reckless behaviour.
What it implies
A degen prioritizes the chance of a very large gain over capital preservation. They may trade on rumours, skip contract checks, or concentrate nearly everything in one volatile asset. The label does not measure skill: a fortunate trade can still have unacceptable exposure and a poor possible-loss-to-capital ratio.
Limits and links
Volatility, thin liquidity, fraud, and liquidation can make an intended exit impossible. Calculate size, identify an affordable loss, and review the asset before trading. FOMO can push people toward degen behaviour; risk of ruin shows why repeated oversized bets matter.
